FAQ's - NUTRITION

Q.   My cousin, S.B. from Los Angeles came in to see you 6 weeks prior to her wedding to lose 25 lbs, she looked great and her skin was so radiant. She told me that you have secret vegetable juices that you recommend, what would be a good one for detoxing?

Mira Hayden, NYC, N.Y

A. There are three organic vegetable juices that are my favorites that I would recommend to choose from while wanting to detox. It is especially effective to drink the Liver Cleanse or the Green Detoxer first thing in the morning to flush the liver and increase peristalsis. The Toxemia Flush is great at anytime that you that you have eaten unhealthy foods or have been exposed to herbicides, pesticides or other contaminants.

The Liver Cleanse; 1 green apple, 1 large handful  dandelion greens, 3 carrots, 2 long celery stalks, 1 beet and ½ lemon.

The Green Detoxer; 1 head romaine lettuce, 5 stalks kale, 2 stalks celery, 1 to 2 fuji apples, 1 lemon and 1 to 2 tablespoons ginger.

The Toxemia Flush; 1 large bunch  spinach, 1 cucumber, 1 large bunch parsley, 2 stalks celery, 3 carrots and 1 green apple.

Rinse vegetables well or spray with a mix of apple cider vinegar and water, process the vegetables through the juicer, one vegetable at a time. The fiber will shoot out of the juicer into one of the containers, while the spout will eject the fresh juice into another container. Pour into a large glass or thermos and enjoy the healthy benefits.

Q.   I wanted to find out if you have a natural vegetable juice remedy for a hangover?

Anna Lipinski, Toledo, Ohio

A.  The liver is adversely affected by over consumption of alcohol, therefore leading to dehydration. First things first; one should take a digestive enzyme called Bao He Wan one hour after drinking, heavy meals consisting of starches and meats or eating too late at night to prevent digestive stagnation. I would recommend this organic vegetable juice;

The Hangover Revitalizer;  2 large ripen tomatoes, 1 peeled cucumber, 6 string beans, handful of dandelion greens, ½ lemon or lime with a dash of  ginger.

Rinse vegetables well or spray with a mix of apple cider vinegar and water, process the vegetables through the juicer, one vegetable at a time. The fiber will shoot out of the juicer into one of the containers, while the spout will eject the fresh juice into another container. Pour into a large glass or thermos, in the event you do not have ginger, just add a dash of hot sauce, this will hydrate the body, flush residues and increase peristalsis.

Q.  What is the most nutritious part of broccoli?

                                                                        Becky Strom
, Riverside, Calif.

A.  The florets contain substantially more cancer fighting phytochemicals and beta-carotene than the stalks, and about the same amount of nutrients; Vitamins A,B6, C, E, folate, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and fiber. Broccoli is a wonderful aid and defender against stomach ulcers as it is rich in sulforaphane which strengthens stomach cells, improves digestion and reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the stomach, especially Helicobacter pylori.

Q.  I am planning to start dieting, I want to lose 25 lbs. There are so many advertisements, diet books, supplements and information that I feel overwhelmed. What is the most important thing to know when beginning to diet?
Heidi Rosenbaum, Columbus, Ohio

A.  The most critical factors in healthy weight loss are an efficient digestion and metabolism of foods. Complete digestion means fewer acidic wastes. This will have three advantages; First; appetite cravings are reduced (food stagnation and toxic acidic food residues create abnormal hunger pangs). Second; fewer acidic wastes, means less fat accumulating around the tummy. Third; a reduction in toxic acidic wastes makes for a more alkaline environment in the body. This in turn increases the production of food digesting enzymes. The more enzymes that break down food molecules in the gastrointestinal tract, the less food remains undigested and the better the chances are of attaining the ultimate in efficient digestion, metabolism and consequent weight loss; oxidation (burning) of 95% of the food you eat.

Also, get off to a good start each and every morning; Absolutely NO sugar or junk food before or during breakfast as this will ferment and putrefy in your stomach which leads to an accumulation of unhealthy bacteria, food stagnation, weakens your pancreas and increases toxic waste in your body. Who wants that?

Q.  Is soy really healthy or is it just hyped up advertising?  I took a trip to Asia and did not see as many soy products on the market or menus like here. How healthy is it?
Mina Westgate, Las Vegas, Nevada

A.   One must be very careful with the use of soy products, do not buy the conventionally processed and genetically modified soy. Select whole fermented soy in the form of miso, natto, organic tofu or tempeh and eat only small amounts like they do in Asia. Fermented soy can contain more pesticides residues than organic soy. Genetically modified soy beans contain more anti-nutrient trypsin inhibitors, lectins and have a higher allergenic potential. According to Luise Light Ed.D, former director of Nutritional Research at the USDA, “Soy is considered one of the top eight causes of food allergies right along with milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shell fish and wheat.”

Soy is a hidden ingredient in approximately 70% of processed foods. It is a very mucus forming plant food. The mucus is a sticky, sludge substance that creates food stagnation, sluggish digestion, decreases metabolism and ultimately triggers weight gain. If you suffer from food allergies, menstrual irregularities, infertility, thyroid imbalances, respiratory disorders; especially asthma, copd or bronchitis, digestive or immune disorders, you will be better off to avoid soy products, especially soy oils, protein concentrates and isolates.

To answer your question regarding soy products in Asia; in Japan they do not eat as much soy as US soy product manufacturers would have you believe, especially not all this processed pseudo- imitation foods they sell in the states. They are eating edamame pods in its natural state, small amounts of tofu, small amounts of soy sauce and drink small bowls of miso soup due to its alkaline nature riding the body of acidic wastes. A book that you may find interesting to read,  The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food, Kaayla Daniel PhD, CCN.
